What is EMDR therapy? 

EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. 

It’s a widely researched and clinically effective form of integrative therapy that was discovered to and designed to reduce distressing emotional symptoms from challenging life experiences including traumatic experiences, addictions, and more. 

Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, alternating auditory sounds, or bilateral physical sensations – hand buzzers), EMDR works with your brain to synthesize and metabolize maladaptive memories and beliefs that are getting in your way.

What issues can EMDR therapy treat?

Whether it’s a single incident event like a car crash, sexual assault, or terrifying plane flight, or if it’s a complex and enduring series of events like ongoing, repeated neglect or disdain from an early caregiver, or other adverse life events EMDR can work well in treating a wide variety of disturbing experiences.

How does EMDR therapy work?

EMDR is widely accepted as one of the most effective treatments for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and I invite you to explore the wide variety of research and articles written about EMDR’s efficacy not only for PTSD but also for a wide variety of other clinical content areas.

 

Can I do regular therapy with you or only EMDR therapy?

Absolutely we can do both! I integrate EMDR into my talk therapy work when and if it’s appropriate and certainly for those who come to see me for EMDR therapy, we can weave talk therapy in, too.

 

 

What’s that strange machine I see on the photos here on this page?

What you’re seeing in the photos is my EMDR equipment – a light bar, tactile sensors, and headphones. The equipment provides me with the opportunity to offer my clients the form of bilateral stimulation that works best for them personally and we find out what this in in our first sessions together.

What are your educations, credentials, and qualifications? 

While the single most important and best indicator of whether or not a therapist will be effective in working with you is the strength and quality of relationship between you both, it’s also good to know you’re working with a therapist who knows what they’re doing and who has some solid training, particularly if your work is complex.

So, to that end I’ll say that I received dual undergraduate degrees from Brown University in 2004 (becoming the first person in my family to go to college, I might add), lived and worked at Esalen Institute from 2007-2011 where I informally trained in psychology for almost four years, received my graduate degree in counseling psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2012, am licensed as a Marriage And Family Therapist in the State of California (#95709), have been practicing therapy in Berkeley since 2013, and completed my EMDR basic training in Fall 2019 and am currently on the path to be certified in EMDR.
